My Therapy Approach

Whether you have been in therapy before, or this is your first time, we will work together to develop a personalized treatment plan, with you and your goals at the center of our work.  Our current lived experience is the result of past experiences, current circumstances, and our patterns of how we understand ourselves and respond to challenges. While we can’t change the past, and sometimes can’t change some current circumstances, we can dramatically alter how we think, feel, and respond to today’s challenges.  Even small shifts in how we process our past and present can lead to significant, long-lasting, positive changes in how we think, feel, and live our lives going forward.

My therapy approach integrates the compassion, acceptance, and deep listening of traditional therapy, with the powerful protocols of evidence based treatments.  Most of these therapies are in the Cognitive Behavioral family and are time-limited. The usual course of therapy is 4-6 months, although some clients choose to continue therapy, to address additional concerns, or for ongoing support and growth.

I offer a free initial 15 min. phone consultation. During this call, I would like to hear about what you would like to address in therapy,  and what changes you hope for. This will allow us to determine if I am a good fit for your needs.  The connection and comfort you feel with your therapist is an important ingredient in successful therapy.  Should you choose to proceed, we will then schedule two to three initial appointments.

During the initial two to three appointments, we will talk in more depth about your past and present,  identify what’s working for you, and what’s concerning you. Sometimes people avoid therapy, fearing that, especially in the opening sessions, old wounds may be reopened. This is not my approach; I am looking for enough information to understand you, your past, and your goals. And you are always in charge of what and how much you share. Sometimes therapy is painful; but just as often, it is interesting, educational, and sometimes even lighthearted. In our feedback session, I will share my clinical assessment of the issues that have brought you to therapy, and present you with some treatment options, explaining how and why they each work. Together, we will collaborate to develop a personalized treatment plan.
