Trauma-Focused Therapy

I have 20 years specialized experience providing trauma-focused therapy,  helping clients recover from a wide range of traumas from across the lifespan: childhood physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; combat, public safety/first responder events;  sexual assault; domestic violence;  witnessing or experiencing crime, violence, or natural disasters; motor vehicle accidents; traumatic illness and injuries.  Many of my clients have been in the armed forces or work as first responders.

Trauma can manifest in more ways than PTSD. It can also show up as insomnia, general anxiety, panic disorder, OCD, and depression. People do their best to cope with the past memories and current pain, but sometimes coping strategies can end up making things worse. Those living with unresolved trauma often struggle with substance abuse, lack of self-care, self-harm, compulsive behaviors, and destructive relationships.

Trauma-Focused Therapies I offer include:
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy

  • STAIR

  • Nightmare Exposure and Rescripting

  • Prolonged Exposure Therapy

  • Written Exposure Therapy

  • Emotion Focused Therapy

In trauma-focused psychotherapy, we address both the direct, as well as the indirect, ripple effects of past trauma. Therapy is about more than “getting over” past events: we work to reprocess and lay to rest memories of trauma, taking your power back; develop new healthy patterns; and weave this work together to move forward in new ways, to a more fulfilling and value-driven life. This catalytic process is referred to as “Post-traumatic Growth,” in which you don’t just lay the past to rest,  you re-create a more authentic, rewarding, and balanced life going forward. Most trauma-focused therapies I offer are in the Cognitive Behavioral family, and all of them are time-limited. The usual course of therapy is 4-6 months.
